The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) involves probabilistic learning via monetary rewards and punishments, where advantageous task performance requires subjects to forego potential large immediate rewards for small longer- term rewards to avoid larger losses. Pathological gamblers (PG) perform worse on the IGT compared to controls, relating to their persistent preference toward high, immediate, and uncertain rewards despite experiencing larger losses. In this contribution, we review studies that investigated processes associated with poor IGT performance in PG. Findings from these studies seem to fit with recent neurocognitive models of addiction, which argue that the diminished ability of addicted individuals to ponder short- term against long- term consequences of a choice may be the product of an hyperactive automatic attentional and memory system for signaling the presence of addiction- related cues (e. IGT) and for attributing to such cues pleasure and excitement. This incentive- salience associated with gambling- related choice in PG may be so high that it could literally “hijack” resources . A framework for future research is also proposed, which highlights the need for studies examining how these processes contribute specifically to the aberrant choice profile displayed by PG on the IGT. Keywords: gambling disorder, Iowa Gambling Task, decision- making, dual- process model, willpower. Introduction. Gambling, defined as an activity in which something of value is risked on the outcome of an event when the probability of winning or losing is less than certain (Korn and Shaffer, 1. Version of the Iowa gambling task: evidence from a normal subject group Ching-Hung Lin1,2,3,4,Tzu-Jiun Song1,Ying-Ying Chen1,5,We-Kang Lee1 andYao-Chu Chiu1* 1 Department of Psychology.
Between 5. 0 and 8. Abbott and Volberg, 1. Welte et al., 2. 00. However, for some individuals (about 1. Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) Antoine Bechara, PhD Purpose: Evaluate decision making mediated by the prefrontal cortex. Age range: 18 to 79 years Admin: Individual. Wardle et al., 2. INSERM, 2. 00. 8), gambling can spiral out of control and become a financial burden on the individual and his/her family. Gambling disorder is defined as persistent and recurrent maladaptive gambling behavior characterized by an inability to control gambling that disrupts personal, family or vocational pursuits (APA, 2. More specifically, similar to substance (e. PG) exhibit a loss of willpower to resist gambling: they persist in gambling despite the occurrence of negative consequences (e. APA, 2. 01. 3). Over the last decade, research has focused on the neurocognitive determinants of gambling disorder and found a number of similarities between drug addiction and gambling addiction (for a review, see Leeman and Potenza, 2. These findings are in line with the new classification of gambling disorder in the DSM- V (APA, 2. Hence, given the absence of the confounding effect of chemical substances that can alter the brain in many non- specific ways, the study of gambling disorder offers one critical approach to understand and extract components specifically involved in the development of addiction. With respect to the study of impaired decision- making in addiction, the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT; Bechara et al., 1. One of the reasons for this ecological validity is that performing advantageously on this task requires, as in real- life, dealing with uncertainty in a context of punishment and reward, with some choices being advantageous in the short- term (high reward), but disadvantageous in the long run (higher punishment); other choices are less attractive in the short- term (low reward), but advantageous in the long run (lower punishment). Hence, the key feature of this task is that participants have to forgo short- term benefits for long- term benefits, a process that is presumably severely hampered in drug and gambling addicts (APA, 2. Accordingly, performance on the IGT has been shown to be a sensitive measure of impaired decision- making in a diversity of neurological and psychiatric conditions (Bechara, 2. For instance, patients with frontal lesions (Bechara et al., 1. Manes et al., 2. 00. SD) individuals (Petry et al., 1. Grant et al., 2. 00. Bechara et al., 2. Whitlow et al., 2. IGT. With regard to PG, it also appears that they display a stubborn preference for disadvantageous deck selection during the IGT (see Table . On the basis of the dual- process model of self- regulation (e. Bechara, 2. 00. 5; Everitt and Robbins, 2. Redish et al., 2. The “impulsive” system is critical for processing the incentive motivational effects of a variety of natural (e. Robbins et al., 1. Wise and Rompre, 1. Robinson and Berridge, 1. Di Chiara, 1. 99. Importantly, this is also the neural system that has been argued to be responsible for the transfer of reward seeking from controlled to automatic and habitual behaviors (Everitt et al., 1. Everitt and Robbins, 2. The “reflective” system is necessary to control basic impulses and allow the more flexible pursuit of long- term goals. This system includes executive functions (EFs), which could be understood as a variety of cognitive abilities that allow the conscious control of thought, emotion and action. The action of the reflective system depends on the integrity of two sets of neural systems: a “cool” and a “hot” EFs system (Zelazo and M. These “cool” and “hot” EFs are achieved through relatively slow, controlled processes and allow to hold on to a mental representation for contemplation and self- reflection (Smith and De. Coster, 2. 00. 0). More specifically, “cool” executive processes include problem- solving abilities that require the capacity to represent a dilemma, maintain, and organize information in working memory, strategically plan and execute a response, evaluate the efficacy of the solution, and make necessary changes based on the outcome (e. Zelazo and M. Hence, “cool” EFs is associated with rational and cognitive determinations of risks and benefits associated with options, and requires the knowledge of the risk/benefit ratio, the ability to retrieve them from memory, and the ability hold them in mind while comparing and contrasting them through working memory processes (Seguin et al., 2. In contrast, “hot” EFs refer to one's ability to monitor the self and the situation for what are considered to be acceptable social behaviors, regulate emotional responses, and inhibit impulsive reactions. These EFs are mediated by ventromedial (VMPC) and orbito (OFC) prefrontal cortex structures that are closely connected to the limbic system, which confers to hot EFs a critical role in regulating affective and motivational processes (Zelazo and M. Hence, by overcoming impulsive triggers, “hot” executive processing results in the ability to advantageously weigh short- term gains against long- term losses, that is, to optimally anticipate the potential outcomes of a given decision (Damasio, 1. Importantly, several theoretical accounts advance that before elaborate decontextualized problem- solving abilities and other related cognitive skills (i. EFs) can begin to be enacted, the ability to control emotional reactions and inhibit basic behavioral impulses may be required first (Barkley, 1. Sonuga- Barke et al., 2. Giancola et al., 2. More specifically, the ability to control emotional reactions and inhibit basic behavioral impulses by “hot” EFs would allow rational and cognitive determinations of risks and benefits associated with options (Giancola et al., 2. For instance, when exposed to high- uncertain rewards, individuals with intact “hot” EF capacities will be capable to control their emotional responses and inhibiting their impulses directed at the reward, which will then make it significantly more likely that they will engage in the more cool abstract reasoning/problem- solving aspects of EF. In turn, the enactment of those “cool” EFs would reinforce the efficiency of reward anticipation processes (e. Thus, adequate decision- making reflects an integration of cognitive (i. EFs) and affective (i. EFs) systems, and the ability to more optimally weigh short term gains against long term losses or probable outcomes of an action. One important consequence of this assumption is that, if learning is suddenly interrupted (e. IGT “blind” phase, occurring after an standard 1. IGT; Stocco et al., 2. Stocco et al., 2. In the present review, based on this dual- process model and on recent influential theoretical accounts (Hofmann and Friese, 2. Hofmann et al., 2. Verdejo- Garcia and Bechara, 2. Stacy and Wiers, 2. No. In other words, the “working hypothesis” here is that the extreme saliency associated with high short- term rewards in PG detrimentally impacts their decision- making profile during the IGT. Gambling disorder and IGT performance. There is a convergence in findings from studies examining decision- making using the IGT in PG (see also Table . More specifically, abstinent (e. Goudriaan et al., 2. Power et al., 2. 01. PG with (e. g., Cavedini et al., 2. Brevers et al., 2. IGT, as compared with healthy control participants. Nevertheless, a couple of studies reported non- significant difference between PG and controls on the IGT (Tanabe et al., 2. Linnet et al., 2. De Wilde et al., 2. This finding could be due to the low sample size of the PG group recruited in these studies (see Table . This absence of significant difference might also stem from the heterogeneity of gambling addiction (even if PGs' preferred gambling was not reported in these studies). More specifically, the literature dichotomizes gambling activities into non- strategic (e. Potenza, 2. 00. 1; Grant et al., 2. Strategic gambling conceivably involves different cognitive demands than non- strategic gambling.

How to Set File Permissions in Mac OS XMac OS X uses permissions to restrict access to applications, files, and folders. Utilizing this security control can help protect your data from unauthorized access. Whether you use your Mac in public places or share it with other users, you may want to change the permissions on your documents to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of your data. Of course, it can be difficult to strike a balance between convenience and security when using permissions. Users who are too restricted won’t be able to perform basic tasks. And if you give users too much power, you risk privilege escalation or worse. Use trial and error to find an adequate level of security that everyone can live with. File Permissions Crash Course. Every file and folder on your Mac has a configurable set of permissions. Permissions control three types of access: reading, writing, and executing. You can mix and match any of the types to grant seven levels of access, as illustrated below. Read, write, and execute permissions overlap to create seven octal permission notations. You’ll learn how to modify permissions using the Info window in the next section. But to really leverage permissions, you need to learn the Unix- based symbolic and octal permission notations, which are hidden beneath the Mac OS X graphical user interface. All of the available permissions are shown in the table below. Permissions. No permission. Execute. Write. Write and execute. Read. Read and execute. Read and write. Read, write and execute. Is there any Mac OS X tools or scripts which allow me to change sharing/permission properties of files and subfolders in a folder recursively? For example, to let everybody or a specific user able to. Good answer, bad example. When adding read and/or write. The Terminal application allows you to use octal notation to set permissions for the owner, a group, and everyone else. To create a “write only” drop box folder, you could set directory permissions to 6. The three groups of notations are shown below. Symbolic and octal permission notations for owner, group, and everyone. Mac OS X automatically sets permissions to limit a user’s access to system files and other user directories. If that protection isn’t good enough, you can change permissions to prevent other users from doing stuff like editing your . It doesn’t provide the same level of granular control as the chmod command, which you’ll learn about in the next section, but it’s a good way to quickly limit access to a file or folder. My 2008 iMac running Mac OS X 10.6.x partially died last night. I was working with iMovie, put it into full-screen demo mode. Warning: This article is about trying to accomplish some things in Mac single-user mode when your system is in trouble. Click the lock and authenticate with an administrator account./li>. Use the menus next to users and groups to change the permissions./li>. When you’re finished, close the Info window. Changes are effective immediately. How to Modify Permissions with chmod. For total control over permissions, you can use two Unix commands - ls and chmod - to display permissions and modify them. Assume you want to find a folder’s current permissions and then change them to 7. This would give you as the owner read, write and execute permissions, and everyone else read and execute permissions. Here’s how to find a folder’s current permissions and change them: Open the Terminal application./li>. Type ls –l, and then press Return. The symbolic permissions of the files and folders in your home directory are displayed, as shown below. This changes the permissions of the folder to rwxr- xr- x. Try modifying the permissions on a couple of sample files. If you need more help, use the man command to display the manual pages for these commands (e. Final Thoughts. Permissions as a security control are more effective in some environments than others. Schools and offices have a real need for permissions - there are lots of users, and the information stored on the computers can be valuable. In single- user households, where only one person uses a Mac, convenience might outweigh any perceived security threats. It’s all about finding the right balance for your environment.
